So, I bet you'd like to be able to take credit and debit card payments on your site for a few items or events, but aren't keen on the expense of developing a customised ecommerce solution?
Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit and debit card payments instantly.
Well, we have the answer, and it starts with setting up a Business PayPal account (This allows you to take payment from anyone with a credit or debit card, not just those with PayPal accounts - important as you want to make this as easy as possible for your customers).

You'll want to allow a few days at least to jump through all their hoops, including verifying addresses, bank accounts and the like and we recommend doing everything they ask for ASAP, it will save you a lot of bother in the long run.

Now on to the fun part - making the payment links... (You can see these in action here: http://www.appleyoga.com/classes/belgravia/)
  1. Log into your PayPal account
  2. Click on the small link at the bottom of the page: "Referrals"
  3. Copy the code from the link they give you - it's the highlighted bit in this example:
Copy the referral business code from here
  4. Now create a link for the item you want to sell, replacing the bold text with the appropriate data (note that we use %20 instead of spaces in the description, this will appear as spaces in the order):

    business=
code which you copied from your PayPal account above...
return= wherever you would like them to go to once payment is complete - great for tracking completed sales in Google Analytics
item_name= description of whatever you're selling. Make sure it includes any variations, and is unique - you need to know exactly what they have ordered. This will show in their cart when they order, on your confirmation email, and on the email they receive from PayPal, so make it count!
amount= price, for example 115.00 would be £115
Obviously, you'd use this link in the background, so the text or image might say "Buy blue widget now" but the link would be as above...
  5. Create as many of the links that you need above, one for each item or price option. Put them anywhere you like on your site or in emails - they do not all need to be on the same page... They will add one of whatever you are selling to a PayPal cart, and the customer can increase the quantity as they wish in the cart.
  6. Now we just need to allow them to view the cart without adding something, so they can finish their purchase... Just put this link on your site or email:
    https://www.paypal.com/cart/display=1&business=ReferralCodeHere
Now, you might be interested in charging varying amounts of shipping to different countries, or for different quantities of various items - that's when things become a little more fun (or complicated, depending what floats yer boat!) so give us a call and we can discuss your exact requirements. PayPal does have limited shipping options within it, and you'll find them under their "Profile" menu.

Let us know how you get on by emailing, or leaving a comment below...

3B Digital Terms & Conditions

1. Commissioning work from 3B is deemed a contractual agreement between the client and 3B Digital.

2. 3B charges:
3B charge studio time at £75.00 per hour to include all and any effort made on behalf of our clients, recorded and logged as 15 minute units, with a minimum charge for any one task or ticket of 30 minutes. Project work, to include new builds and site redesign, is charged on a fixed-fee basis (whenever possible) based on a pre- agreed cost.

On all project work, fees are charged as follows: a non-refundable deposit 50% of the total in advance of any work (immediately upon commission), and 50% upon completion (and prior to any site launch). No studio time will be allocated to a new project without receipt of this deposit.

3B expects payment by BACs, cheque, credit card (with a 3.4% surcharge) or cash within 14 days of the date on the invoice. 3B charges VAT at the standard rate.

NB: 3B reserves the right to revisit any cost quote if late submission of content by the client results in allocated studio time being wasted or unused.

3. Any print, web or associated work (including code, images and graphics) completed by 3B remains the property of 3B until paid for in full.

4. Hosting:
3B will in all cases make a hosting recommendation, but the decision as to where and with whom to host rests with the client.  Moreover, 3B does not take responsibility for any hosts performance, and does not guarantee any server “up-time”. All hosting contracts are subject to the chosen hosts’ terms and conditions.

We will ensure that where appropriate the site works on a chosen hosting server and carry out any server set up that is necessary. In certain circumstances there is an additional cost associated, but in most instances server set up is straightforward and incurs no extra charge.

5. Domain names:
3B will manage a clients' domains for them and endeavour to maintain the registration and re-registration of a clients' domains ongoing until instructed otherwise by the clients. We do so under the terms and conditions of the nominated domain registrar (our preferred registrar being 123-REG), and 3B Digital cannot be held responsible for domains being "lost" or becoming unregistered.

6. Copyright:
3B will make recommendations regarding image usage and associated copyright infringements and permissions. However it remains the responsibility of the client to seek and acquire any required permissions and rights, and all material (both text and images) supplied by the client and used in the construction of the client's web site, will remain the client's property.  All such material will be assumed to be the property of the client and free to use without fear of breach of copyright laws.

7. Browser & Platform compatability:
All websites will be built to work best with the most popular current browsers (Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 and above, for example). Whilst every effort will be made to check browser compatibility, 3B can take no responsibility for an individual's PC or Mac browser settings (meaning that we cannot be responsible for a user experience (UX) if certain features have been disabled locally, or if a firewall and / or security setting has affected the UX.

Typically we test compatibility on the following browsers & platforms: Opera, Chrome, Firefox, Safari (all latest versions), IE (6 to 9), mobile web kit, mobile Chrome, mobile Safari, Windows XP, Windows 7, Linux (ubuntu), OSX 10.6, Android 4, iPhone OS5 & iPad.

We will check for IE6 compatibility if we know that a sizable portion of potential site users are likely to be in large corporations (especially in the city) where terminal set-ups are antiquated or long overdue for upgrade. There is an additional charge of 15% to cover the additional development time involved for this browser’s compatibility.

Apple iPhone - Recommended Apps and Settings

Here at 3B we LOVE the iPhone - you're probably bored by now of every man and his dog going on about how they can change your life, but we're not exaggerating!

The iPhone has a phenomenal email interface, which interacts beautifully with our recommended enterprise-level email system Google Apps. Text message conversations are displayed logically, in a thread so you can see what you have previously discussed with your contacts, and the web browser (forgiving the lack of Flash and Java) is fantastic. If you can get your hands on one, have a play - you won't regret it!

iPhone Apps - extend the functionality of this beautiful deviceNow, we have spent a lot of time playing with (and using for business!) our iPhones, and would like to offer you a list of the most useful (or at least the most used by us) applications and tips...

A feature that is lacking in the included tools and applications on the iphone, is easily added through the download of “Say Who - Dialer” from the AppStore. 3B's Guide to Campaign Tracking

The following is the 3B Digital guide to help you make sense of Google Analytics campaign tracking. The following is a guide of our "best practices" to help you understand the campaign tracking and see how we use it for our clients. I think this guide will aid you create simple URLs that will help you track the flow of traffic to your site.

The idea of campaign tracking is that you see how effective your campaign has been. Google Analytics accurately tracks visitors from a source, such as a search engine or Email link, to a conversion or transaction on your site. It is used perfectly for site traffic driving initiatives such as banners, e-mails and newsletters.

The following are the data elements that can be tracked within the URL:

The original site URL: http://www.example.com

* Source: This identifies where the traffic came from - email, newsletter, twitter, banner, MSN, YAHOO
* Medium: To identify the medium of the campaign that it resides on - email, social-media, cost-per-click
* Content (optional): Used to differentiate links that point to the same URL - header of a newsletter or content of a newsletter.
* Term (optional): Uses a keyword filter so you can see how each link of the email campaign performed - [EMAIL], [LANGUAGE], {keyword}
* Campaign: Identifies the specific campaign/promotion - Product Launch, Glastonbury2009, Summer Sale

These are examples of valid URLs:

* http://www.example.com/example.html?utm_source=newsletter_001&utm_medium=email&utm_content=header&utm_term=[EMAIL]&utm_campaign=summersale
* http://www.example.com/example.html?utm_source=msn&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=leftbanner&utm_term={keyword}&utm_campaign=my-campaign

There are a few pointers that we at 3B recommend.

* Only use one question mark. One URL should only contain one question mark, if not the URL will/may break. (e.g. do not do the following http://www.example.com?id=123?utm_source=src&utm_medium=med&utm_campaign=cmp)
* It is good practice not to use capitals. Capitals can be used but it will mean that Google Analytics will think they are two different campaigns (when in fact they want to be tracked as the same campaign):
- http://www.example.com/example.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=header&utm_term=[EMAIL]&utm_campaign=SUMMERSALE

Some more examples - Campaign specific:

A TWITTER CAMPAIGN
The original site URL: http://www.example.com
Source: twitter
Medium: social-media
Campaign field: tweet

URL: http://www.example.com?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social-media&utm_campaign=tweet

E-NEWSLETTER CAMPAIGN using PHPList
The original site URL: http://www.example.com
The source: newsletter
The Medium: email
The Content: Within the main text content (instead of header or footer etc)
The Term: Tracking language field within PHPList (English or German) (this could be any attribute - just use [ATTRIBUTE] instead - capitals, in square brackets - [EMAIL] is a good one if you don't need to track other attributes, and lets you know exactly who hit the site!)
Campaign field: product-launch

URL: http://www.example.com?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=main-content&utm_term=[LANGUAGE]&utm_campaign=product-launch
