A new style of domain name has been launched that aims to become the online equivalent to the telephone directory by allowing individuals and businesses to store and manage all their contact information online whilst tailoring to their customers' needs. This development is being touted as the most significant innovation since the .com.
The new .tel domain name is currently only available to trademark owners, who can apply for their products, businesses and brands, but will be seeing a release to the general public on 3rd February 2009 for priority applications on a first come, first served basis. Whilst these domains will probably command a premium, experience shows that after a few months, the .tel price should compare favourably with competing domain names.
What makes .tel stand out from the crowd is that it requires no local hosting, it is an entirely online process driven by DNS servers. This means that there are no website building, hosting or management costs, once you have registered the domain and input your contact information, the process is complete. This makes it possible to provide the user with different information depending on how they connect to the service, instead of simply seeing a website when they enter a .tel address on their phone or computer. This gives the .tel domain the potential to be a highly sucessful communication and networking tool in addition to a physical website.
3B Web Design will be offering .tel as part of our hosting and domain registration services.
