PPC vs SEO - conversion, comparisons and your preferences
Written by Jack Bremer
Wednesday, 31 December 2008
“If you were forced to choose between SEO or PPC, which would it be?”Peter Prestipino reported in Website Magazine back in May 2008 on the results of the Engine Ready study into the role that traffic source (direct, organic search or paid search) plays in visitor purchase behaviour, with some very interesting statistics being uncovered. The study investigated 27 companies over 2 years "in order to 1) gain an understanding of how visitors behave based on how they arrive at a website, 2) provide insights into customizing the visitor experience based on traffic source, and 3) offer insights on how to leverage budgets among the four main traffic sources of SEO, PPC, inbound linking and branding."

Engine Ready found that direct linkers (those coming to your site via a typed-in web address or bookmark) are over four times as valuable ($5.69 spent per visit) to those coming from an organic listing discovered on a search engine ($1.35 spent per visit.)

"The average sales dollar value per visitor arriving from a PPC ad was $1.91, or 41 percent higher than that of a visitor from an organic listing. In fact, paid traffic converted at a 20 percent higher rate and experienced an average order value 18 percent above that of traffic from organic listings."

Website Magazine goes on to mention a survey they conducted themselves, asking their readers to choose between search engine optimisation or search engine marketing (PPC ads) if they could only employ one strategy for their company's digital marketing. Almost 250 respondents took part, and it was found that less than a quarter would choose PPC - interesting given the dollar-figures above, but understandable when you think of the long-term benefits of SEO as a single option. PPC may have a huge impact on your sales, but perhaps it should be used as a complimentary marketing component to driving people to your site in their droves through SEO? Your responses in the comments please...

Yes I agree that paid listing can give you targeted traffic compared to organic listings. Conversion rates are definitely higher in the case of paid listings too...

We go with both SEO and PPC. A strong presence on both sides of the SERP and a convincing message works best for our clients.

I think the results of direct linkers vs ppc or organic can be explained by sales cycle timing factors. How often does 1 visitor come to your site before conversion? Direct linkers have been exposed to your company.

"Jack and Alex wrote my original website for me several years ago which I was very happy with... So happy, in fact, that I went back to them to write my new website which has just been finished.
The result is a properly Google searchable site which I can control myself and for which the boys are always there to help with problems and improvements.
A website is not something that a company should knock up for you and say goodbye... with these guys it is a constantly developing personalised shop window." Andrew Nebbett, Proprietor, Andrew Nebbett Antiques
