Outlook 2007 - Rendering Engine Modification
Written by Teenum Chudha
Wednesday, 05 November 2008
Users of Microsoft's Outlook 2007 will have noticed a change in some of the e-mails they open. These changes have been triggered by Microsoft switching Outlook's HTML and CSS rendering tool from Internet Explorer to Word 2007, a strange decision considering the recent release of Internet Explorer 7 and Word's poor HTML proficiency.

Outlook 2007Internet Explorer is progressed enough to support current HTML tendencies used in many newsletter emails whereas Word is limited in its HTML and CSS capabilities. Email is a primary Internet activity, making email newsletters a highly relevant part of many digital marketing strategies. HTML is utilised in e-mail campaigns to grab readers' attention with images, layout design and colours, often resulting in better response rates than pain text. Internet Explorer is progressed enough to support current HTML tendencies used in many newsletter emails, whereas Word is limited in its HTML and CSS capabilities, ultimately preventing users of Outlook 2007 to view many newsletters. Common features that Outlook 2007 no longer processes include:
  • Spacing: even basic margin and padding is not available.
  • Alt/Title/Description Tags: another missing feature drastically reducing accessibility.
  • Background Images: commonly used for separating areas of text.
  • Animated GIF Images: Outlook 2007 will only display a static image.
  • Flash: Outlook 2007 is unable to support Flash and other plug-ins.
  • Positioning: Simply aligning sub-divisions to the left or the right will adversely affect how Outlook 2007 will open the message.
The explanation offered by Microsoft is they opted to use the same program to both create and display emails. Outlook originally used two separate products for rending emails, Word was used to compose messages and Internet Explorer to open them. Internet Explorer falls short of allowing editing, which is why Word was chosen for the single rendering and editing tool for Outlook.

"Why stop there? Why not use Notepad to view BMP images? Why not use Windows Live Messenger to edit video?"
Technical expert Chris Pirillo

Until Word is enhanced to the standards of Internet Explorer, emails will have to be created with Word's standards in mind. Any HTML will have to be kept very plain and simple and we advise you also offer a text-only version.
